Urwerk UR-110 PT & PTH – If Captain James T. Kirk wore a Swiss timepiece on his voyages, this would be it! Urwerk is a Swiss based watch-making company that was founded in 1995. The name is creative and consists of two parts. Ur is an ancient Sumerian city of Ur, where people over 6000 years ago used giant sundials to measure time. Werk means to work, create, evolve, shape, etc. in the German language. It is also a play on the German word “Uhrwerk”, which is the German word for the movement used in watches (thank goodness for Wikipedia).
This new Urwerk UR-110 PT/PTH is a sight to behold, I’ve not had the chance yet to see it in the metal but it does look rather cool. It has a Star Trek kind of look about it, almost Starship Enterprise-y. I really do admire this type of haute horology where science meets art. The UR-110 PT/PTH has a very sleek look to it and from the pictures I’ve seen circulating on the interweb, looks like it fits like a glove.
Now for the technical spiel, the UR-110 PT/PTH has a revolving satellite complication with rotating hour/minute modules mounted on planetary gears with a power reserve of 39-hours. On the visible control board you’ll see: “Day/Night” indicator; “Oil Change” alerting service intervals and small seconds. The case is made from grade 5 titanium. On the PT model, the bezel is made from 950 platinum and is a limited edition of 20 pieces – on the PTH, the bezel is made from 950 blackened platinum (although I do wonder why on earth they did this) which is also a limited edition of 20 pieces. The crown has two positions and is integrated into the case for protection. If you decide to keep this timepiece attached to your wrist while splashing around in the pool on the back of your yacht, then you’re good up to 3 ATM.
There is absolutely no denying that this is an attractive timepiece but I’m sure as with most things in life that are this good-looking, it comes with a hefty price tag (pun intended). So, for now I’ll just admire the Urwerk UR-110 from afar.
