The “First Omega in Space” Omega Speedmaster with Blue-Grey Dial

October 3, 2024

It’s been some time since Omega refreshed the “First Omega in Space” (FOiS) collection. The first reissue, introduced in 2012, recreated the iconic CK2998 reference, and Speedmaster enthusiasts couldn’t get enough of it. The numbered edition quickly became a hit. In 2016, Omega unveiled a limited edition FOiS in blue two-tone, featuring a panda dial and a blue tachymeter bezel. Two years later, in 2018, Omega released another two-tone panda version—this time in black—paying homage to the rare pulsations’ bezel Omega had previously crafted. This year, Omega has once again reissued the FOiS, this time with a strikingly noticeable detail.

The new Speedmaster CK2998 sports a 39.7 mm stainless steel case, which stays true to its heritage with the absence of crown guards. The case boasts brushed sides and polished lugs, reminiscent of previous straight-lugged Speedmaster models. One of its standout features is the black aluminium tachymeter bezel, which includes the sought-after period-correct DON (dot over ninety) detail—a feature sure to please any Speedmaster aficionado. The dial is protected by a box-form, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, while the back of the watch features a screw-down solid case back, engraved with the iconic hippocampus and Speedmaster inscription.

Undoubtedly, the dial is the highlight of this Speedmaster. Beneath the new hesalite-like sapphire crystal, Omega has added a CVD-coated dial in a stunning grey-blue hue, replicating the tones found in certain CK2998 models from the 1960s. To enhance the vintage appeal, Omega has applied a subtle faux patina. While some may debate the use of this technique, it perfectly complements this dial design. The hour markers and Alpha-style hour and minute hands are filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, while the central seconds hand, or “Baton” hand, is finished in white varnish.

Staying true to Omega’s heritage, this watch features two vintage Omega logos—one on the dial and another on the crown. The nod to history continues on the case back, which displays a Seahorse medallion alongside engravings that read, “SPEEDMASTER,” “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.” Hidden beneath is Omega’s Master Chronometer-certified calibre 3861, the same movement used in current Speedmaster Professional models. It delivers a 50-hour power reserve and features a Co-Axial escapement for superior accuracy and reliability.

Wearers can personalize how they strap this timeless piece to their wrists. The FOiS can be paired with either a black or brown leather strap with a buckle, or with a full metal bracelet featuring “flat links” and Omega’s patented comfort release adjustment system.

The new Speedmaster FOiS with blue grey dial doesn’t appear to be limited like previous iterations and will retail for £7,400. For more information on this new timepiece visit omegawatches.com.
