The past year has been somewhat odd and 2021 hasn’t started out any better but at least we have the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics to look forward to just over a year from now. While the Speedmaster has made quite the impression this year on us, I think it is important to note that Omega are quite well-known for the dive watch endeavours. Omega has been the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932. During that time, the company has been proud to record the feats of the world’s greatest athletes and timed many of the most famous sporting moments in history. Beijing 2022 will mark the company’s 30th occasion in the role.
Since 1993, the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M has enjoyed quite the following, perhaps even more so than the revered Speedmaster. Loved for its design and ocean technology, the original timepiece signalled Omega’s triumphant return to the world of diving watches. As the Official Timekeeper of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Omega have decided to celebrate this occasion a little early, with the introduction of the Seamaster Diver 300M “Beijing 2022” Special Edition. Featuring a 42 mm case crafted from stainless steel and includes a unique grade 5 titanium bezel ring with a 60-minute diving scale in positive relief – giving this new Seamaster a rather unique look.
This new Seamaster Diver 300M “Beijing 2022” Special Edition now features a sunburst blue ceramic [ZrO2] dial that has been laser-engraved with waves along with rhodium-plated indexes and hands filled with Super-LumiNova. As a special tribute to Beijing 2022, there are also five special minute-markers at 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12 o’clock, with each one created in the five colours of the iconic Olympic Rings. All indexes have been raised and filled with Super-LumiNova and to keep track of the days, the date window is now displayed at 6 o’clock instead of 3 o’clock. Even the skeleton hands have been subtly reshaped, which fans of the model will surely notice.
One of the Diver 300M’s most often talked about details has been its helium escape valve. For the new models, the valve has been given a conical shape, which has been patented by Omega with an ingenious technology that allows it to be operated underwater.
Turning the watch over reveals a polished and brushed caseback that includes a stamped Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 emblem. OMEGA’s patented NAIAD LOCK system keeps all the engravings in perfect alignment, while behind the caseback sits the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8800. This powerful movement and the entire watch have passed the 8 tests set by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), guaranteeing the industry’s highest standards of precision, performance and magnetic resistance.
Finally, each model is presented on a traditional iconic polished and brushed stainless steel bracelet that features Omega’s patented extendable foldover rack-and- pusher with an extra diver extension and comes in a special white presentation box.
The new Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300m “Beijing 2022” Special Eidtion is available as mentioned in stainless steel and presented in a special white box. These will retail for £5,280 and will be available to purchase from April 2021. For more information on this new Seamaster, visit the official Omega website.
