Every year Omega seem to pull out all the stops to brings us something new and 2021 is no different. We’ve seen what Omega can do with Ceramic, especially when it comes to the Speedmaster, which has seen countless iterations in Ceramic and yet the Seamaster hasn’t quite been afforded this same treatment – until now. For 2021 Omega’s famous dive watch is finally embracing the dark side, with a new model in what Omega are calling the “blackest black”?
Since 1993, the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M has enjoyed quite the following, perhaps even more so than the revered Speedmaster. Loved for its design and ocean technology, the original timepiece signalled Omega’s triumphant return to the world of diving watches. Omega have taken advantage from what they’ve learned over the past few years of using ceramic, to create a watch in contrasting shades from a single colour. As always, Omega has stayed true to the 300M’s original design and ensures the watch meets all required dive watch parameters. Admittedly, this new Seamaster 300M Black Black is quite a sight to behold and its stealth qualities might just suit one Mr. Bond.
This new Seamaster Diver 300M Black Black features a black ceramic [ZrO2] dial that has been laser-engraved with waves along with PVD indices, which have been filled with anthracite Super-LumiNova. A new coating Omega have also used on the diving scale, the skeleton hands and dot at 12H. The laser engraving of the ceramic dial has also been taken a step further, with the minute track, wording and even the Omega symbol, including details all being etched in positive relief from just one single piece. This method used delivers a contrasting effect, while giving the watch a very distinctive look. The same positive relief style has also been used on the diving scale of the unidirectional bezel.
The 43.5 mm black ceramic [ZrO2] case of the Seamaster 300M Black Black has been polished-brushed and is fixed to the wrist by an integrated black rubber strap with a buckle in the same material as the case. One of the Diver 300M’s most often talked about details has been its helium escape valve. For the new models, the Omega watchmakers also created black ceramic versions of the crown and helium escape valve.
Turning the watch over reveals a polished and brushed black ceramic caseback with a sapphire window affording a view of the movement. Keeping everything oriented is Omega’s patented “Naiad Lock” with wave-edged design, while behind the caseback sits the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806. This powerful movement and the entire watch have passed the 8 tests set by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), guaranteeing the industry’s highest standards of precision, performance and magnetic resistance.
FLEETING THOUGHTS
The Speedmaster has been created in every form of ceramic from black through to white and I think it was only a matter of time before we saw Omega do this to the iconic Seamaster 300M. This is definitely a bold move from Omega, and it will be interesting to see what iterations in ceramic we see over the coming years.
The new Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300m Black Black is available as mentioned in black ceramic. It will retail for £7,410 and will be available to purchase from July 2021. For more information on this new Seamaster, visit the official Omega website.
