In 2006, marking the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus, Patek Philippe unveiled a ground-breaking addition to its esteemed collection: the Nautilus 5980/1A. This model, notable for its incorporation of a chronograph complication, represented a bold step forward for the iconic line. In 2013, Patek Philippe further refined the Nautilus with two updated versions, available in solid rose gold and stainless steel/rose gold variations. While we found the updated editions quite appealing, the bi-metal version left us somewhat less enthused, though its striking blue dial certainly caught the eye.
Patek Philippe continued to expand the Nautilus chronograph series with the introduction of the 5990, catering to the needs of frequent travellers with added practical features. Fast forward to 2024, and Patek Philippe has unveiled yet another innovation: the flyback Nautilus.
Enter the Patek Philippe 5980/60G, a timepiece that may not adhere strictly to purist expectations but nevertheless commands attention with its stunning aesthetics. While retaining the iconic Gerald Genta porthole design, this model propels the Nautilus into a new era of technical prowess. Originally conceived as a symbol of simplicity, elegance, and functionality, the 5980/60G exudes a bold, ultra-modern aura that may polarize opinions, yet Patek Philippe skilfully integrates these contrasting elements.
Crafted from 10-carat white gold, the 40.5mm case of the 5980/60G embodies Patek Philippe’s commitment to excellence. Flanking the crown protector at 2 and 4 o’clock are two sizable chronograph pushers, harmonizing with the polished bezel and brushed finish. Reflecting a prevalent theme of denim blue in Patek Philippe’s 2024 offerings, the timepiece is paired with a blue-grey calfskin leather strap featuring a denim pattern.
The blue-grey dial of the 5980/60G bears the iconic horizontal Nautilus embossed pattern, evoking nostalgia while embracing modernity. Adorned with luminescent-coated hour markers in 18K white gold, the dial features a 60-minute chronograph register at 6 o’clock, alongside a 12-hour mono-counter and a date aperture at 3 o’clock.
In terms of movement, the 5980/60G inherits the chronograph complication from its predecessors, employing the calibre CH 28-520 C/522 base movement. This movement, distinguished by its traditional column wheel design and disk clutch chronograph mechanism, remains unchanged. Through the sapphire case back, the intricate workings of the calibre CH 28-520 C/522, including the heavy central unidirectional 21-carat gold automatic rotor, are elegantly displayed, inviting admiration from horology enthusiasts.
The new 18-carat white gold Nautilus Flyback Chronograph Ref. 5980/60G-001 is priced at £67,620 For more information visit patek.com.
