The El Primero is a legendary creation with a debated origin story. In the early 1960s, the race was on to develop the world’s first self-winding chronograph. Among the contenders were Heuer/Buren-Hamilton/Breitling, Seiko in the Far East, and Zenith from Le Locle. While the debate continues over who was first, Zenith indisputably announced the El Primero with three references: the A386, the A385, and our focus today, the A384.
The A384 distinguishes itself with its 70s-style “square barrel” stainless steel case, adorned with the Zenith 4-pointed star logo. Sporting a dynamic “panda” dial with contrasting chronograph counters and a touch of red, this particular A384 from the ZENITH: ICONS program hails from one of the final 1972 production lots. It remains remarkably preserved, never having been worn, and retains its original protective varnish, making it an unpolished gem.
