Zenith’s re-creations of iconic watches in recent years, particularly the revered El Primero, have enjoyed widespread success. However, for enthusiasts seeking more than just a replicated timepiece, Zenith has introduced the Zenith Icons program in the past few years. This initiative, akin to practices adopted by other manufacturers, offers unique models like the A384, A385, and A386.
Enter the Zenith Icons program – a virtual time capsule. Within this initiative, vintage watches carefully selected, sympathetically restored, and certified by the Manufacture are presented to the discerning audience. The latest highlight is an exceptionally rare, unworn A384, preserved untouched for over 50 years since its production, and exclusively available through Zenith’s e-commerce platform.
The El Primero is a legendary creation with a debated origin story. In the early 1960s, the race was on to develop the world’s first self-winding chronograph. Among the contenders were Heuer/Buren-Hamilton/Breitling, Seiko in the Far East, and Zenith from Le Locle. While the debate continues over who was first, Zenith indisputably announced the El Primero with three references: the A386, the A385, and our focus today, the A384.
The A384 distinguishes itself with its 70s-style “square barrel” stainless steel case, adorned with the Zenith 4-pointed star logo. Sporting a dynamic “panda” dial with contrasting chronograph counters and a touch of red, this particular A384 from the ZENITH: ICONS program hails from one of the final 1972 production lots. It remains remarkably preserved, never having been worn, and retains its original protective varnish, making it an unpolished gem. This collector’s dream is offered as a complete set with its leather strap, hang-tags, original box, and user manual, and, like all ICONS vintage pieces, is backed by the Zenith restoration atelier.
Zenith’s commitment to a more sustainable future is evident in its HORIZ-ON CSR initiative. The Zenith Icons program aligns with this vision, contributing to a circular economy for historical references and ensuring their perpetual existence. For collectors, it provides unparalleled assurance by offering 100% original examples examined and certified by the ZENITH Manufacture’s Heritage Department, each respectfully restored in adherence to the watches’ original materials and components.
This vintage Zenith El Primero is currently available to purchase from Zenith’s e-commerce site for £35,600. For more information, visit zenith-watches.com
